Blue

Since adopting Blue in February 2006, he has become our "child." He is a spoiled dog, but that's how we like it. He has full run of the house, the bed and the couch! He is extremely loving and affectionate. In short, he's a cuddle-bug. I have never owned a dog but my husband has had dogs his entire life. I was skeptical about adopting a dog and was very choosy on what type of dog I wanted. Not too big, not too small, etc. That day at the shelter, I didn't see any dogs that appealed to me. I remember walking up to Blue's cage, which was adorned with "Dog of the Week," and he was very cold and rigid. I walked past him. When leaving the shelter, a dog walker had Blue on the agility equipment. I said to Dan, let's go check out the "Dog of the Week." Blue was not timid, but not really friendly at that point either. We both petted him and talked to him, but he didn't seem to enjoy our company. Then we were approached by Mary Ellen. Her kind remarks regarding Blue were very positive. Althouth he didn't seem like the dog we wanted, she was sure Blue would be a great match for us. There was something about him that I liked. I couldn't put my finger on it, but that night while my husband and I talked it over, I was convinced Blue was coming home with us. Mary Ellen did warn us that owning a pit bull would take some effort. With the bad reputation of being a "Bully Breed", were we ready to handle and defend the comments regarding our dog? Ready to convince people he was an extremely mild-mannered dog, who would love to lick you to death (oh boy, does he!) and just want to cuddle with you on the couch? We read up on his breed and chose to take the chance.

We adopted him two days later, and the rest is history. Blue was shy for the first few days. With blankets and pillows, I slept on the living room floor with him for a week. In the next few months, he became more and more affectionate. He was a totally different dog than when he was in the Humane Society. I don't know what our home would be without him. I am grateful for the people at Hernas Veterinary Hospital in Schenectady for nursing Blue to good health and having faith in him. And to the volunteers and staff at the Humane Society for making our adoption process so easy. Also to Mary Ellen, who was very helpful and supportive of our adopting Blue. She has so much love for these animals and it shows.

These pictures are of Blue and his favorite two people: his dad and nephew, Jack. Jack is the first child that Blue encountered and Blue loves playing with him. He is also very protective of him. Blue is also a great cuddler, when he wants to share the couch or bed. This is one of his favorite spots.
