Please note that due to insurance and liability reasons you must be at least 18 years of age to volunteer. We do not accept volunteers who will be receiving outside compensation for their services.
To get started, please click on signup to complete our online orientation.
- Sign-up is required.
- Once we review your application, we will send you the link to our Online Orientation. The Orientation is provided at no cost and covers basics of volunteering.
- A three part, online training program follows the orientation.
- A background check is required to volunteer.
- A small start up fee of $35 covers the cost of supplies, uniform and training.
Please note: we use peanut butter throughout our facility.
School-Required or Court-Ordered Community Service
A minimum of 20 hours is required for individuals wishing to complete their community service with MHHS. Community service will be served with our Empties for Animals team, sorting bottles and cans to help achieve our fundraising goals. For safety and liability reasons, there is no direct contact with the animals. Applying for orientation is not required for community service - all you need to do is fill out a Community Service Application.
If you are under 18 years old looking for less than 20 hours of community service for school, please refer to our Offsite Opportunities webpage for ideas on how to help out the shelter. If you would like to do one of these options that tallies up to the community service hours you require, we can certainly sign off on your community service requirement. Please email our volunteer manager to confirm potential projects.
Thank you for thinking of MHHS and our animals for your school or corporate group volunteering event.
Please know in advance that when groups come in to volunteer, for safety and liability reasons, there is no direct contact with the animals. Groups will work with our Empties for Animals team sorting donated bottles and cans. Due to social distancing requirements, the maximum group number may change. Please refer to the application for more details. Children 10 and over are permitted to volunteer in a group with a parent or guardian accompanying them.
