Become a Volunteer

Do you have extra time on your hands? Do you love animals? Do you want to give back to your community? Become a volunteer with MHHS!

To Get Started:

We have a variety of available volunteering opportunities. Check out our Volunteer Directory >> for openings to see if they are the right fit for you.

For insurance and liability reasons, you must be at least 18 years of age to volunteer. We do not accept volunteers who will be receiving outside compensation for their services.

To get started, please click on "sign-up" to complete our online orientation.

  • Sign-up >> is required.
  • Once we review your application, we will send you the link to our Online Orientation. The Orientation is provided at no cost and covers basics of volunteering.
  • A three-part, online training program follows the orientation.
  • A background check is required to volunteer.
  • For standard volunteers: A small start-up fee of $50 covers the cost of supplies, uniform and training.
  • For Telling Tales* volunteers: A small start-up fee of $60 covers the cost of supplies, uniform and training.

*Telling Tails is a volunteer program for children ages 5-17. Participants can sign up to read to adoptable animals at MHHS on Wednesdays and Sundays between 3 and 5 pm. Reading to animals can boost the confidence of children, provide enrichment for the pet and help pets become more comfortable around people. Please check our Volunteer Directory >> for more information.

Please note: we use peanut butter throughout our facility.

School-Required or Court-Ordered Community Service

A minimum of 20 hours is required for individuals wishing to complete their community service with MHHS. Community service will be served with our Empties for Animals team, sorting bottles and cans to help achieve our fundraising goals. For safety and liability reasons, there is no direct contact with the animals. Applying for orientation is not required for community service. All you need to do is fill out a Community Service Application.

If you are under 18 years old and looking for less than 20 hours of community service for school, please refer to our Offsite Opportunities webpage for ideas on how to help out the shelter. If you would like to participate with one of these options that tallies up to the community service hours you require, we can sign off on your community service requirement. Please email our volunteer manager to confirm potential projects.
