Lilly

On behalf of Lilly (formerly known as Princess), I want to extend our heartfelt wishes to all the volunteers and staff at the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society!

My first Bassett, Lucy, also came to us from your shelter 17 years ago. She was already advanced in years when we adopted her but in the two short years she spent with us, she taught us all about the breed. After Lucy, we became very involved in Bassett Hound Rescue and established the first "waddle" here in the Capital District. We fostered and rescued Bassetts who kept our home filled with joy. When the last one passed away two years ago, I needed to step back and reassess the situation at home.

My daughter, also bereft from the loss, brought home a Great Dane puppy. Zeus added plenty of excitement to the home, but I still missed the unique attributes of the Bassett Hound presence. In September of this year, my daughter told me about Princess, a Bassett Hound on your web site. After seeing her photo, I was at the front door the following morning when the shelter opened. It was love at first sight! My daughter returned home to bring Zeus to the shelter to meet Princess. Lilly was smitten with Zeus and the two have become best friends.

What impressed me most about adopting Princess from the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society was the level of care and attention given to each animal. Bassett Hounds have notoriously thick toenails and Lilly's had been professionally groomed by a staff member. Her long ears had been cleaned and she had received all of her inoculations. More surprising was learning that I could not bring her home until later the following day as the staff had scheduled to clean her teeth. When Lilly coughed a few times before we left, the vet staff immediately came forward to analyze the situation and put her on medication. The only thing I provided was a new bed and the drive home. :)

Lilly has an absolutely amazing personality. Were she to be entered into the Miss America pageant, she would definitely win the "Miss Congeniality" award. She loves greeting people and their canine companions. On a recent trip to PetSmart, Lilly singled out one dog whose owner cautioned me to keep a safe distance as her adopted dog did not get along with other dogs. Lilly, unperturbed by the owner's pronouncement, immediately made friends with the frightened dog, who wagged his tail. The owner exclaimed this to be a first.

Lilly is the Totie Fields of Bassett Hounds and keeps us all entertained. She enjoys weekend outings to the NYS OGS Off-Leash Dog Park, where she can mix and mingle with many other dogs and their humans. Today, we visited PetSmart to have her picture taken with Santa Claws. Lilly is our gift from Santa this year, thanks to the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society. Thank you again for your outstanding work! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all!

Carolyn
