Mona
Hi! Here is Mona's story!
My husband and I decided that we had room in our lives for one more dog. We'd adopted two rescues, both beagle mixes, and wanted to save another life. Knowing the over-representation of pit bull type dogs in shelters, we knew that saving one was our next adventure. Our biggest challenge would be finding a dog that could get along with our low- to medium-energy beagles and be okay with our three cats.
I found Mona on Petfinder.com. She was with Rottie Empire Rescue and before that she'd been at MHHS for several months. I fell in love with her block head and her extra long tongue. We found out that Mona had been picked up as a stray downstate before making her way up here, thanks to MHHS. She's also been adopted - and returned - twice due to her "overprotective behavior." After having her for two weeks, we saw this behavior ourselves, but instead of giving up we decided to provide more structure in the home and training. In a very short time, Mona relaxed and her true, goofy self came shining through. She can still be slow to warm up to certain people, but we've had cookouts at our home and taken her to public events with many dogs and people without problem.
Mona is truly a joy and a very smart girl. She loves to chew her bones and we're working on the "return" part of fetch. She and her sister, Jessie, wrestle like maniacs then settle down for a long snooze. She loves her twice-daily walks through our neighborhood and is working on slimming down to a healthier weight. We can't imagine our lives without this wonderful girl and are so glad we were able to give her the home she needs! She's helped make us much better dog parents, too!
Thanks to all the staff and volunteers at MHHS and RER who spent time with, cared for and believed in our Miss Mona!
