Leben

One Year Anniversary!

One year ago last week I walked into the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society looking for a small weiner dog to have as a new companion. Looking around the Humane Society I realized how many pit bulls and pit bull mixes were up for adoption. Hell bent that I would never own one of those "violent breeds," I kept walking through the shelter waiting to spot my little weiner dog. Next to a little puppy was a skinny, pit bull/lab mix with a strange burn on his face and on his ears. I approached the dog and, despite the obvious horrible situation he came from, his tail began to wag furiously and I knew then that I would never own a little weiner dog. I took Yeller home, got him fixed up (with the help of the Humane Society), got him a heart surgery he desperately needed and the rest is history.

Today Leben (German for "life") is my 69-pound best friend. He is great with kittens, puppies, and now that I am 6 months pregnant, I have no doubt he will be great with young children as well. We loved Leben so much we even adopted another "aggressive breed" dog, a Rottweiler/Doberman mix named Oden.

The Mohawk Hudson Humane Society is a great place to adopt animals but in the sad event that you have an animal pass away, they continue great service to aid in the benefit of animals. Zeppellin, my cat of 7 years, passed away and I brought him to the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society for private cremation. The staff was wonderful and didn't make me feel silly for not being able to hold back tears even as I was standing in the lobby. In memory of my cat, I adopted my second animal from the Humane Society and couldn't be happier. Another great addition to the family!

In closing, I would like to stress to all potential adopters from the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society to go into the shelter without preconcieved notions about Pit Bulls and Pit Bull mixes. The little dogs come and go and are adopted much faster. If you really want to do some good in this world and have a friend that gives you a feeling of happiness and appreciation for the ability of a living being to rise above their negative past, get yourself a Pit!!

Gotta go; Leben, Oden and I are gonna go swimming!

Thanks again!
