Daisy

We adopted our Redbone Coonhound, Daisy (previously known as Kanga), in early June 2012. We were at the shelter to drop off some donated pet supplies, and we weren't planning on adopting a dog, but we fell in love with the beautiful, sweet red dog in the corner kennel. There were definitely some behavioral challenges at first, but we could see that our Daisy was a sweet and highly intelligent girl who just needed a loving home and some training. Now, over a month later, we are so happy to have her in our home. She still has occasional not-so-great days, but her progress has been amazing. She is a constant companion, following her new family members all over the house and yard, and accompanying us on car trips when the situation permits. She is SUCH a smart girl who responds extremely well to positive training methods (clicker and treat), and she quickly mastered commands such as sit, down, and shake (we are still working on come and stay!). She came from the shelter already great at walking on a leash, and is even good off-leash in our unfenced yard. She absolutely adores her toys and looks forward to her daily walks, during which she greets many neighbors of both the human and canine variety. She also loves going to doggie daycare a couple days a week, and the dog park where she can run with other dogs. We are hoping to eventually get her into some kind of agility program so she can utilize her athleticism and seemingly endless energy.

Looking back on the past month, I am in awe of how far Daisy has come. For a dog with an unknown past, she has adjusted to her new routine very quickly. She is thriving now that she has the household routine down, and can trust that she is going to be fed, walked, etc. Now that she is more comfortable, she is curious about absolutely everything, and it is so amusing to see her discover the little things in life, such as drinking out of the hose, watching the neighbors out the front window, etc. Seeing her learn to trust and love her new family and settle into her new home has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. She has brought so much happiness to our family and we are so grateful to have her.

We would like to thank Mohawk Hudson Humane Society for caring for our Daisy before she found her forever home.

With love from the Wingle family
